The continued effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are now contributing to a global plastics shortage. At the onset of the pandemic, lockdowns paired with demand for products containing plastic caused sharp increases. Additionally, chemical shortages inflated paints and plastics prices. As a vital link in the global manufacturing supply chain, plastic pellets are part of a vast majority of products; including barrels. As with the shortage of toilet paper in 2020, companies scrabble and hoard supplies to now meet an increase in orders. This panic-buying worsens shortages due some companies stock piling.
Adding to the current shortages in shipping supplies are the limited number of trucks available to transport orders. This is in part due to the fact that COVID-19 is highly contagious and not all of the population is vaccinated. Add to that the Delta variant and the fact that even vaccinated supply chain workers and truck drivers may fall ill and be forced to forego their shipping routes.
